Latitude Artist/Accessibility Advocate, Belinda Sellers is featured in October's Nougat Magazine!
Most articles in Nougat are not available online -so here is an excerpt from Belinda's article. We are very proud of the amazing job Belinda has done in helping to create awareness of accessibility needs in Lexington and particularly in the role she played in creating a Commission for People with Disabilities for the city of Lexington. To be honest - if it weren't for Belinda- Lexington would not have a Commission now.

Belinda Sellers:
Bruce and I had some problems with the wheelchair falling into holes on the sidewalk (downtown) and not being able to get into Starbucks, so we started Easy
Access (Project Easy Access Lexington). We go on out and fix the holes ourselves so other people don't have to fall into them like we do. We talked up (sponsored accessibility rallies), told people how we felt and made signs and had people speaking and took them for walks with us so they could see for themselves what it's like not to be able to get into the door or fall into a hole. The Mayor spoke up and told them how we need to fix these things. We counted too- we counted how many people ran through that red light at the Opera House. (106 red light runners in 100 opportunities) It's bad for everybody who has to walk out there and we are trying to make it better. I won an award for that called the Unsung Heroes and my picture was up on the side of a bus and schools because I am helping them.
Last summer we were looking at awards and cities had the Commissions (many U.S. cities have commissions on people with disabilities) and we wondered why we (Lexington) couldn't have one too, and so we asked for one and went to meetings about it and sent email. Now Bruce and I are on the Commission ourselves.
