On Television (Lifetime Network, April 12, 9pm)
A film version of the book The Memory Keeper's Daughter by Lexington's Kim Edwards will be seen on the Lifetime Network. This is a very powerful story and important to us as it revolves around a child who is born with Downs Syndrome. It was named by USA Today as the "Book of the Year" for 2006 and it spent over sixty weeks on the New York Times Best Seller list. What's more you may notice a thanks to us from Kim in the Forward of her book. Kim credits us with aiding her in piecing together her story- a generosity on her part I think. This occurred when Kim conducted a writing workshop with us about seven years ago. This is how she describes that experience in a recent interview on the Lifetime website:
"I was invited to do a workshop for a group of adults who had different kinds of mental challenges. I had never worked with that population, so I wasn't sure what to expect. But when I went in, I had a really wonderful experience with them. It made a very deep impression on me."
Joan Brannon wrote about that workshop for Arts Across Kentucky magazine- and you can read it here and even see a picture of Kim with some of the artists.

ABC's Extreme Home Makeover television show featured Latitude artist Jessie Dunahoo. Parts of the show which depicted Jessie at work were filmed at Latitude. The show was a big hit and Jessie received email and phone calls of support from across the entire country. There is talk of a possible exhibit of Jessie's work in Florida. We'll keep you updated!

Heavy Load is a British Punk Rock band - but what is most cool about them is that they consist mostly of musicians who have learning disabilities. There is a great documentary about them in theaters now. We are working with some friends (thanks Ace) to try get it here in Lexington. Not only do punk musicians make great role models - they're big hit Stay Up Late has spurred a kind of movement in England that is really about transportation and entertainment --- well--- deprivation issues. Do you remember when Latitude sponsored 3am discos?- same thing. Anyway here is the movie link and a youtube link. We will keep you posted about our efforts to bring the movie to Lexington
